Committed to Scriptural Authority

Sermons Sermons2026 2 Timothy

The main idea from this sermon is straightforward: your Christian life is only as robust as your commitment to the authority of Scripture. Everything the preacher has been teaching about the Christian worldview—the metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical framework that makes sense of all reality—means nothing if you aren’t actually submitting to God’s word in the daily details of your life. All Scripture is breathed out by God, which means it carries His full authority and demands your complete surrender. The preacher walks through 2 Timothy 3 and forces you to inspect your own life: husbands, are you loving your wives as Christ loved the church or are you wasting time on video games? Wives, are you submitting to your husbands or tearing down your house with feminist ideology? Kids, are you guarding your friendships and refusing to be unequally yoked with unbelievers? The word of God is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness precisely because it disagrees with what you naturally think and what the culture affirms. If it agreed with you, it wouldn’t need to correct you. The progressive Christian who rejects Scriptural authority on any point is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and the deconstructionist who claims they used to believe but now don’t is merely proving they were never saved to begin with.

The second truth you need to hear is that emulation of Christ is a declaration of war, and you will be hated for it. Verse 12 guarantees persecution for all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus. If you seek to live in obedience to God’s word, if you stand boldly on the truth, you will be slandered, mocked, called a bigot and unloving—just as they did to the prophets and to your Lord. Rejoice in that, because it means you’re in good company. The unbeliever goes from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived, but you are called to continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. Do not yoke yourself to unbelievers. Young men, an unbelieving woman will destroy your life. Young women, an unbelieving man cannot love you as Christ loved the church. Patiently wait on the Lord and use this time to become the man or woman a godly spouse would want to marry. God’s word sets you apart from the world. You were once fools, but now by God’s grace you are being made wise unto salvation, complete and equipped for every good work. Never stop seeking to be transformed and sanctified. The unbeliever wants to be affirmed; the Christian spends their entire life being conformed to the image of Christ. Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and everything else pales in comparison to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus your Lord.
