The Mechanics of the Gospel

Sermons Sermons2026 Romans

The preacher opens with a crucial truth you cannot afford to ignore: the gospel is forensic. It deals with crime and punishment, law and justice, and there is no gospel apart from the law. If you don’t understand what you’re being saved from, you cannot understand your need for a Savior. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Every single one of you is a liar, a cheat, a thief, a blasphemer who has perverted the image of God you were made to reflect. You have rejected your purpose and declared yourself your own god, determining for yourself what is right and wrong. Because of that, you stand condemned. Divine justice demands that crime be punished. If you stand before God in your own righteousness, you will be judged guilty and sentenced to eternal destruction away from His presence. That is not negotiable. That is not up for debate. That is the sentence. And like it or not, you will answer for every single thing you have ever done.

But here is the good news that transforms everything. God in His mercy put forward Jesus Christ as a propitiation by His blood. That means Christ was put forward by God to satisfy His own justice against your sin. He lived the perfect life you refused to live. He died the sacrificial death you deserved to die. He took your place as your substitute. The wrath of God that was meant for you was poured out on Him so that you could go free. And then He rose from the dead, conquering death forever. This is the great exchange: He who knew no sin became sin for you so that you might become the righteousness of God in Him. When you place your trust in Jesus, surrender your life in exchange for His, repent and turn from yourself to Him, you are sheltered in Him. You are clothed in His perfect righteousness. You stand before God not on your own merit but in Christ. Hallelujah, what a Savior. The law condemns you, but Christ has satisfied every demand of justice. In my place condemned He stood. Sealed my pardon with His blood. That is the gospel. That is how you stand before God and live.
